![]() ![]() ![]() Today, the concept is quickly evolving to become the “Quintuple Aim,” which incorporates health equity as another key element necessary to truly achieving improved patient care, outcomes, and costs ( 6). Research showing decreased clinician engagement and burnout directly correlated to lower patient satisfaction, reduced health outcomes, and higher costs led to the realization that achieving the initial 3 aims needed to start with the clinician ( 5). A few years later, the concept evolved to become known as “the Quadruple Aim” to include clinician well-being. In 2007, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement introduced the Triple Aim, a concept of improved patient experience, better outcomes, and lower costs as key to health care transformation ( 4). Who can argue against the promise of improved health while accelerating economic growth? Given this, maybe it is time for us to rethink health as an investment rather than just a cost and focus on how to truly optimize health care and health systems. However, a report from the McKinsey Global Institute suggests that prioritizing health care using existing approaches can present an economic opportunity of about $12 trillion by 2040 ( 2). Previous conversations on how best to address these impacts have focused on controlling health care costs vs promoting health. real GDP between 4% and 11% caused by COVID-related health costs ( 2). The COVID-19 pandemic has only served to highlight these trends, with estimates suggesting a reduction in U.S. Adding to that, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement estimates that health inequities cost the United States roughly $83 billion-a figure that is anticipated to grow to $300 billion by the year 2050 ( 3). It has been estimated before the COVID-19 pandemic that premature deaths and lost productivity associated with poor health costs the United States about $3.2 trillion (16% of GDP) annually ( 2). The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored many existing realities of our health care system, including how much health matters, how health and the economy are inextricably linked, and the importance of achieving health equity to realize good health for everyone. ![]()

This method was later used in the 5th century by Chinese father-and-son mathematicians Zu Chongzhi and Zu Geng to find the volume of a sphere. Ī similar method was independently developed in China around the 3rd century AD by Liu Hui, who used it to find the area of the circle. This method was further developed and employed by Archimedes in the 3rd century BC and used to calculate the area of a circle, the surface area and volume of a sphere, area of an ellipse, the area under a parabola, the volume of a segment of a paraboloid of revolution, the volume of a segment of a hyperboloid of revolution, and the area of a spiral. 370 BC), which sought to find areas and volumes by breaking them up into an infinite number of divisions for which the area or volume was known. The first documented systematic technique capable of determining integrals is the method of exhaustion of the ancient Greek astronomer Eudoxus ( ca. See also: History of calculus Pre-calculus integration In a surface integral, the curve is replaced by a piece of a surface in three-dimensional space. For example, a line integral is defined for functions of two or more variables, and the interval of integration is replaced by a curve connecting the two endpoints of the interval. Integrals may be generalized depending on the type of the function as well as the domain over which the integration is performed. In the early 20th century, Henri Lebesgue generalized Riemann's formulation by introducing what is now referred to as the Lebesgue integral it is more robust than Riemann's in the sense that a wider class of functions are Lebesgue-integrable. Bernhard Riemann later gave a rigorous definition of integrals, which is based on a limiting procedure that approximates the area of a curvilinear region by breaking the region into infinitesimally thin vertical slabs. The fundamental theorem of calculus relates definite integrals with differentiation and provides a method to compute the definite integral of a function when its antiderivative is known differentiation and integration are inverse operations.Īlthough methods of calculating areas and volumes dated from ancient Greek mathematics, the principles of integration were formulated independently by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in the late 17th century, who thought of the area under a curve as an infinite sum of rectangles of infinitesimal width. Integrals also refer to the concept of an antiderivative, a function whose derivative is the given function in this case, they are also called indefinite integrals. Conventionally, areas above the horizontal axis of the plane are positive while areas below are negative. The integrals enumerated here are called definite integrals, which can be interpreted as the signed area of the region in the plane that is bounded by the graph of a given function between two points in the real line. Today integration is used in a wide variety of scientific fields. Integration started as a method to solve problems in mathematics and physics, such as finding the area under a curve, or determining displacement from velocity. Integration, the process of computing an integral, is one of the two fundamental operations of calculus, the other being differentiation. In mathematics, an integral is the continuous analog of a sum, which is used to calculate areas, volumes, and their generalizations. ![]() ![]() ![]() 17 February 2021 No Comments Facebook Twitter Pinterest Email Reddit. Formed from the collapse of massive stars' cores and other vast collections of matter, black holes pack staggering amounts of mass into small volumes. Thanks to this ground-breaking project, we have now reached the boundary between the universe and what lies within a black hole.An original prediction of general relativity, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 1915, black holes are among the most extreme objects in the universe. We see their effect rather than the objects themselves. Our observations of these objects have almost exclusively been indirect, creating simulations and models. We still don't know what’s inside a black hole, however, and so far we have very little certainty about what surrounds them. The details of these findings have been published in multiple papers in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. The observation of the black hole is an incredible feat, but it is also a crucial test for Einstein's theory of general relativity, quantum mechanics, and certain astrophysical theories. It has a mass 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun and stretches for 40 billion kilometers. M87 is an elliptical galaxy 54 million light-years away, and its supermassive black hole is much larger than the one at the center of our own galaxy. "This shadow, caused by the gravitational bending and capture of light by the event horizon, reveals a lot about the nature of these fascinating objects and has allowed us to measure the enormous mass of M87’s black hole." "If immersed in a bright region, like a disc of glowing gas, we expect a black hole to create a dark region similar to a shadow - something predicted by Einstein’s general relativity that we’ve never seen before," explained chair of the EHT Science Council Heino Falcke of Radboud University, the Netherlands in a statement. Combined, they have the power of a single telescope the size of Earth, the only approach that would allow them to gather enough data to see M87 like this. The EHT's telescopes are spread all over the world, from Chile and Spain to Hawaii and Mexico, all the way down to the South Pole. The further apart the telescopes are, the more precise the images. Don’t think of YA as ‘adult fiction that’s been dumbed-down’ Basically, it's one category of literature (note: not genre, like romance or horror) that will never go out of style.Īll the more reason to learn how to write a YA novel, right? Without further ado, here are 8 essential tips for writing young adult fiction, courtesy of Kate Angelella! 1. Whether it's reliving one's own vivid teenage years or relishing the drama that accompanies someone else's, young adult fiction evokes strong emotions and reactions in all of us. Obviously, YA fiction taps into something that we all find incredibly compelling. On top of that, the stories themselves tend to be just as interesting and profound (if not much more so!) as adult fic.įor grown-up readers who may still need some reassurance, note that well over half of YA readers are over the age of 18. Of course! Though YA fiction is (by definition) about and primarily intended for young adult readers, well-drawn YA characters are relatable to readers of any age. First love is a common theme in YA fiction, as in John Green's The Fault in Our Stars These books' massive popularity, not to mention the fact that they were all adapted into blockbuster movies, clearly demonstrates the cultural impact of well-written YA and shows that it's not going away anytime soon. Hinton's The Outsiders in 1967, YA fiction solidified into what it is today.Īs for contemporary YA examples, look no further than some of the biggest bestsellers from the past few years! The Fault in Our Stars, The Hate U Give, and the Divergentseries would all be classified as young adult novels. ![]() In fact, neither was marketed to teenagers, but caught the attention of young readers through their highly affecting portrayals of adolescent psychology. Two perfect examples of classic YA novels are The Catcher in the Ryeand Lord of the Flies. Indeed, these elements are hallmarks of both classic and contemporary young adult fiction. They realize that life must fundamentally change as they exit childhood and enter adulthood - a transition that results in a loss of innocence and shifting sense of identity. To delve into it a bit more, most works of YA fiction would be labeled “problem novels” and/or “coming-of-age novels.” The characters in these works experience intense emotions and often existential angst as they come to grips with their place in the world. Though originally intended to “bridge the gap” between children's and adult lit, YA has become a respected category of literature with many well-known titles in its canon. YA stories follow teenage characters as they grapple with the unique challenges of adolescence, such as navigating relationships and finding oneself. Maria Scrivan explained it best in her book's description, "If Natalie can focus on who she is rather than who she isn't, then she just might realize she's more than enough, just the way she is.Young adult fiction, or YA fiction, is literature that targets readers aged 12-18. All kids are awesome, they just sometimes get lost in what they want to be versus who they already are. Nat begins to search for herself with the help of some new friends. The left was a bit more solid - it housed one of our two points - but they were coming close to breaking through thanks to their control of a central hall where half the walls had been ripped away. Anybody who ventured there was sniper fodder - even if you just wanted to nip inside the tempting doorway near the top, or chuck a grenade. The right side, down the train tracks toward their spawn point, was a total no-go. I'd been getting better as the round progressed, and figuring out where we all were. So there I was, fighting the gritty war for the Fuhrer (I'd decided to switch allegiances because the war cries were more amusing), sneaking around a railway yard trying to get a bead on the enemy.
